The Pros and Cons of Tile Roofing

Tough, stylish, and all the rage—tile roofs have found a foothold in Florida and they aren’t going anywhere.

While still fairly new to the scene and not as popular as the iconic (and affordable) asphalt shingles, tile shingles continue to increase in use all over the state. There are some serious downsides—and some major upsides—to consider, but we’ve laid out a comprehensive guide to help you decide whether tile is right for you!

Clay Tile

Pros:

  • Particularly durable in Florida’s extreme heat
  • Outrageously long lifespan
  • Resistant to insects and rot

Cons

  • Tiles can become dangerous projectiles in Florida’s hurricane-force winds
  • Fragile when stepped upon
  • Very heavy—sometimes requiring a reinforced frame

Notes

Southwestern in origin, these tiles are extremely popular across Florida for their heat resistance.

Concrete Tile

Pros:

  • Low maintenance
  • Highly durable and heat resistant
  • Mold, insect, rot-resistant

Cons:

  • Extremely expensive
  • Very heavy
  • Long-term issues with breakage, curling, and color-fading

Notes

A newer option, concrete tiles are starting to make their way across Florida, but are still gaining momentum. They are lighter than clay or slate tiles, but can be fabricated to look just like them; likewise, concrete tiles can be molded to look like wood tiles.
