There is truly nothing like a Florida summer. The intense humidity and scorching temperatures mean one thing--thunderstorms. When one of those bad boys break loose, we all run for shelter. And, your home is the perfect place to be during a storm… if you keep it well maintained.

There are a few summer roofing preparations you should absolutely complete to ensure your roof is secure for summer weather. Seasonal maintenance will prove beneficial, as you will notice minor roofing issues before they turn into potential disasters. There are three common causes of roof damage in Florida: wind and hail, falling trees, and standing water from a storm. Protect your roof, and it will do its job protecting you. Here is your summer roofing checklist!

How To Prepare Your Roof For Florida Summer Weather

Inspect Your Attic

Even though you might think attics are supposed to smell, they’re not. If your attic smells musty, you have a problem. Must is a result of humid, damp environments. So, if your attic starts to smell, contact a roofing technician, as your roof has probably sprung a leak. If left unattended, mold will foster and spread. Get your roof repaired before mold moves into your home.

Look For Damaged Roofing Tiles

Roof shingles keep water and grime from seeping into your home. When damaged, roofing shingles can jeopardize the integrity of your home. If you do not feel comfortable navigating your roof, call a professional to come and inspect your roofing tiles. However, if you are confident that you can climb to your roof, and balance once you’re up there, then you can complete this task yourself. Once you are safely standing on your roof, inspect it for broken tiles. If you have visibly broken or missing shingles, call a professional roofer to come and repair your roof immediately. You never know when the next storm will hit. Better to be safe than to be wet and sorry.

Look Inside For Leaks

If you have not checked your roof lately, and notice discoloration, or see sagging, on your ceiling, you probably have a pretty severe leak. This may be a result of damaged flashing, sealer used between your roof’s joints, or missing roof shingles. When water gets into your property, it becomes detrimental to your home’s air quality, structure, and foundation.

If left unresolved, water damage can lead to mold and mildew growth. This affects the air in your home and as a result, endangers the health of you and your family. Asthma, allergies, and respiratory infections are common reactions to mold presence, and, in advanced cases, can lead to nervous system disorders. Once you notice a leak, address it immediately so your home remains a healthy space for you and your family.

A leaking roof can also cause structural and foundational deconstruction. After a thunderstorm, walk your entire home to ensure no leaks sprung over the duration of the storm.

Clean Your Gutters

If you see debris, let it free. Your gutters are responsible for funneling water away from your home. When your gutters are filled with dirt, leaves, and other debris, they are unable to relocate your excess rainwater. Without a conduit for runoff water, the soil around your home will become flooded and wreak havoc on your home’s foundation, as wood and water are simply not friends.

Trim Your Trees

If you have trees on your property, check to make sure its branches are not hovering over your home. During a storm, tree branches may fall and cause detrimental roof damage. You will need a roof repair, or a roof replacement, as a result, and probably have to undergo water damage restoration. Not to mention, a broken roof may put your family in harm's way. If you encounter this roofing emergency, call a professional roofer ASAP.

Very Fast and Honest

I had Bruce give me a quote on my roof he was very honest and not pushing me to do or sign anything. Proformance roofing worked well with me and my insurance company. The job was completed in one day. The guys cleaned up well. Thanks.

Great job by all

A great job by all involved, Bruce in sales to the roofing crew and their site manager Joe. I was told 1 day for completion, and they pulled it off. The only thing I can fault them for was the cleanup of the nails. In their defence, the crew ran out of daylight, but 1 call the Bruce and he had the crew out the next day to pick up the leftover nails

Got the job done fast.

I RECOMMEND THEM TO EVERYONE LOOKING FOR A ROOFING COMPANY. Frank was quick to reply to me, quick to come out and give an estimate to one of my customers selling his home and even better yet got the job done fast. When everyone else wanted to sell him a new roof (which was only 6 years old) Frank did the repair that was needed and left a happy seller!
